United Way of Central Florida Highlands County Division Announces Funding for 24 Programs Serving the Community

Friday July 2, 2010

The United Way of Central Florida Highlands County Board of Directors has awarded $242,215.00 in grants that will help support 24 area health and human services programs administered by 18 local nonprofit agencies in the coming year. An additional 8 non-profit agencies provide service in Highlands County but are funded through a Polk/Hardee allocation fund that includes overlapping service area into Highlands County.

Out of the 24 programs approved for funding by United Way community volunteers, 15 programs received funding increases, 3 programs will see reductions in United Way funding and 6 programs will see their funding remain the same.

All United Way funding applicants were asked to demonstrate how their programs would help achieve community goals and support the outcomes of its Community Impact Agenda. Four teams of community volunteers spent four months evaluating applications, asking questions, and visiting the programs. The volunteers evaluated the ability of programs to verify a critical community need, to describe the service that addresses that need, and to identify measurements that substantiate successful results.

The following is a general description of where resources from United Way’s Community Fund will be invested in the coming year:

• Education – Serving Family & Youth $ 129,635
• Income – Serving People in Crisis (Basic Needs) $ 56,516
• Health – Health & Disability Services $ 52,641
• Emergency Fund $3,423
