Prior to introducing this activity to your child, you are going to need to do a little prep.
Create your number cards
Make as many as you see fit for your child.
Also consider their capabilities; some children may need to start with 1-5 first and some children may be ready to work on much larger numbers.
You will give your child a bowl full of cheerios and tell them that today you will be counting with cheerios.
Show them the number of cards you made.
Let them know that each circle represents one cheerio so that is where they will put them.
Once they have filled in their number cards, encourage them to go back and count them again.
You can introduce the concepts of addition by giving your child 2 number cards. Have them fill them in just as they had done before but ask them to see if they can figure out how many they will have if they add two cards together. Go back and count both cards to get your total amount.
