What is The Carol Jenkins Barnett United Way Children’s Resource Center?
The Children’s Resource Center is a collaboration of organizations committed to strengthening families and our community by increasing access and awareness to resources and services.
Located in the heart of Lakeland, it is a community-based learning and resource center that provides educational classes, community activities and support for parents and caregivers of children aged 0- 6, as well as for expectant parents. Agencies offer services on-site to provide a one-stop opportunity for parents and caregivers.
According to the Florida Dept of Education, research shows that only 45% of students are ready for kindergarten. Knowing that children who start behind often stay behind, UWCF has worked with local experts in early education, establishing standards for early literacy services and age-appropriate curriculum.
The Early Childhood Education initiative was founded in 1995 by Carol Jenkins Barnett, former director of Publix Super Markets Charities. Carol envisioned bringing together resources from private businesses, government, religious groups, educators, and health and human service organizations under one roof, maximizing the benefit to parents, guardians and children.
In her legacy, we’re picking up the baton and continuing her dream of giving all children in our community the chance to succeed.
