International Women’s Day, which has been observed since the early 1900s, is now celebrated annually on March 8.
Today, we celebrate the achievements of women leaders and identify ways to amplify their voices. Women continue to be a driving force at United Way, as Women United has grown into a global network of some 70,000 members, and the most successful philanthropic effort of its kind.
Grounded in the idea that addressing the most critical local needs lifts the community as a whole and creates a better life for us all, Women United members take action on issues that hit closest to home by giving, volunteering and advocating.
Here are six ways you can promote gender equality in your community or organization:
- Share social posts that uplift women. Share content created by women and content that empowers women. By taking this step you can lead by example and inspire others to do the same.
- Encourage a friend or family member to fight gender bias. Even if you are not a female-identifying person, you can be an ally. Everyone is capable of enacting positive change and amplifying female voices.
- Call out gender bias when you see it. It’s important to spread awareness and call out inequity wherever it exists. By speaking up, you bring attention to an issue that must be made right through continuous work.
- Start a conversation. Start talking about language and phrases connected to inequity and gender bias. What does inequity mean? What are some examples of bias against women? Brainstorm ways to fight against them. Consider culture, religion, education, socioeconomics and how gender bias is present in our lives.
- Spread awareness about the benefits of becoming a mentor. Awareness is the keyword here. You can ask your employer for an opportunity to give back, including hosting or participating in Day of Caring. Email volunteer@uwcf.org for more information about Day of Caring. Sharing your experience may inspire others to also get involved.
- Join your local Women United group. Women United is a global organization, more than 70,000 women strong. If you or someone you know needs support, considering joining our local chapter. Find more information on UWCF’s Women United here.
