Gather several outdoor items: leaves, tall grass, flowers, etc.
Vocabulary:
Seasons
Winter
Spring
Summer
Fall
Instructions:
Find a quiet place to sit together with your child. Consider going outside together for this conversation. Talk to your child about the four seasons: Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter.
If possible, walk around to see if you can find outdoor items: leaves, tall grass, flowers, etc.
Bring these items home to make a collage
When talking about each season ask the following questions:
What is the weather like now?
What do you think the weather is like in other parts of the world? Is it different from where we live?
What do you wear in each season?
What are some holidays we celebrate?
How do trees change?
Encourage your child to draw or paint a picture of their favorite season. While they are drawing, engage them in a conversation about why this is their favorite season.
What are your favorite things about this season? Why?
What are some things you do during this season?
Do you like any other seasons? Why or why not?
Instructions:
Use this opportunity at home to go through your child’s closet. Include your child in a conversation about what items you would wear in each season. You can organize the closet based on seasonal clothing.
See what items your child may not fit in anymore. Talk with them about possible things that can be done with the clothing they can’t wear. Maybe a younger sibling or family member could use the items, they can be donated, they can be used to create something new like a blanket, etc.
Ask your child what season they have the most clothing for? What season do they have the least clothing for? Living in Florida where the weather tends to be warmer, talk to your child about why they may not have as many winter items.
Together, create a list of items needed for each season. It can help parents spend wisely on clothing that is really needed.
