Ant Fun Facts Activity

Online Learning. Family Fundamentals.

Materials needed:

  • Paper
  • Makers, or paint
  • Scissors
  • Glue or Stapler
  • Egg Carton
  • Celery
  • Peanut Butter
  • Raisins

Vocabulary:

  • Ant
  • Strong
  • Vibrations
  • Thorax
  • Abdomen

Instructions:

  1. Ask your child if they know anything about ants.
    • Allow them time to share anything they may already know.
  2. Tell them you have some fun facts about ants that you’ll be talking about today. For example:
    • Ants are very strong. They can carry up to 20 times their own body weight.  That means if your child was as strong as an ant, they could pick up a small car.
      • Encourage your child to show how strong they are. Show your muscles.
    • Ants don’t have ears! So how do they hear?  They feel vibrations on the ground.
      • Lay on the ground, have someone stomp or jump near you. Ask your child if they can feel the movement in the floor.  That is how an ant knows if something big is close, and they go the other way.

Extension:

  1. Learn about the 3 body parts of an ant. Head – Thorax – Abdomen
    • Using 3 pieces of an egg carton (try and leave connected if possible) have your child color or paint these to become an ant.
    • Show your child each body part and say its name. Encourage your child to point to each as you say them together.
  2. Make a yummy treat Ants on a Log. Using celery sticks, fill with peanut butter (to make the log), and put raisins (ants) on top. Eat and enjoy! If your child has an allergy to nuts, use softened cream cheese.
