United for ALICE

Who is ALICE?

You know ALICE. You see ALICE every day. They are the teacher at your child’s school daycare, your cashier, aging parents on Social Security, your server when you go out to eat.

They are essential, yet they struggle to survive.

ALICE is Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed.

ALICE is hardworking, yet one emergency from financial ruin. They live in continuous fear of an unexpected bill that may extend them beyond their already tight budgets.Nearly half of households in our area are working hard, but not able to consistently make ends meet every month. We call this population ALICE.

ALICE lives above the federal poverty level (approximately $24,250 for a family of 4) but below what it costs to provide for the basics of self-sufficiency: housing, childcare, food, transportation and healthcare.

Despite economic growth, across Florida 14.5% of households still fall below the federal poverty line and an additional 29.5% of households fall below the ALICE threshold. Which means that nearly half of households in Florida are struggling and are one financial setback away from potentially falling into poverty.

48% of households live paycheck to paycheck, higher than the Florida average. This includes nearly 53,000 in poverty and another 140,000 who are ALICE.

While wages are growing, three other factors – inflation, loss of pandemic supports and a decade of falling behind – combined to keep ALICE trapped.

United Way of Central Florida works to empower ALICE through youth education initiatives to ensure our youngest residents get the support they need to graduate ready for college or career and adult financial stability and workforce initiatives to help adults achieve family sustaining wages and build financial literacy.
