Tell your child that you will be doing a science experiment today. Ask your child: What do you think will happen if we pour this oil and this water together? What do you think it will make? (be sure to show them the oil and water when having this conversation)
Write down your child’s responses. Tell them this is your hypothesis, what you think will happen and read what you wrote back to them.
Tell them we are going to test your hypothesis.
Show them all the materials you will use to do the experiment.
Encourage your child to carefully pour oil into container. This can be done by first putting oil into a measuring cup or something with an easy to pour spout. Help your child as needed.
Next, fill the remainder of the container with water.
Have your child put any of the optional items in the container now.
Ask your child: what do you think will happen when we add these other materials?
Put the lid on and secure it tightly. Use tape if necessary.
Gently tip the container upside down then flip back right side up. This will get the bubbles bouncing.
If using Alka-Seltzer tablets, note the bubbles will start bouncing as soon as the tablet hits the mixture.
Go back to the hypothesis you wrote down. Read it back to your child. Ask them: Was your hypothesis correct? What happened when we poured oil and water into the same container?
