Materials needed:
- Paper
- Makers, crayons, colored pencils
- Scissors
- Glue or tape
Instructions:
- Ask your child if they know anything about spiders?
- Talk about the following:
- How many legs does a spider have?
- What do most spiders eat?
- Where do most spiders live?
- Do spiders have hair?
- A spider is not an insect but rather an arachnid.
- Make a handprint spider craft.
- Using a paper large enough for both your child’s hands, trace your child’s hands but be sure to leave out the thumb. (Spiders have eight legs not 10).
- Allow your child to color and decorate their spider.
- Is it hairy?
- Brown, black, etc.
- Encourage your child to share things about their spider.
Extension:
- Make a spider web with tape or side-walk chalk outside. Encourage your child to design their own web.
- If using tape, you will likely need to model how to use it. But encourage your child to try.
- Go on a spider web hunt. Look at the intricate designs that these different spiders can make.
- Ask your child what they notice about each one you find.
- This may be a good opportunity to see if you have any poisonous ones around that may need to be relocated
