Remembering ALICE Families on Halloween
Halloween is just around the corner! As you greet your trick-or-treaters, keep in mind that 51% of all children in Polk, Highlands and Hardee County live in families that either are in poverty or are ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed), unable to afford basics. So, to help each child you meet have a great holiday, remember:
- Don’t comment on how they’re dressed. Their families may live on tight budgets and may not have the time or money to invest in a costume.
- Don’t comment on their age. Older kids want to enjoy the holiday, too – and candy might be a rare treat.
- Do offer them treats and wish them a Happy Halloween!

As you’re trick-or-treating or chatting with neighbors this Halloween, keep in mind that some houses won’t be leaving the porch lights on for trick-or-treaters, and that’s ok!
There may be several reasons, but ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) households – which make up 51% of all households in Polk, Highlands and Hardee County – may not have the budget or may not be home to give out treats, often working multiple jobs to make ends meet.

ALICE makes Halloween possible
We all know ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) – and we all rely on ALICEworkers each day. Halloween is no different. ALICE helps us get the treats, costumes, decorations, pumpkin spice, and everything that makes Halloween nice.
Happy Halloween!
