Instructions:
- Today, we will be working on spelling with paper plates.
- You can choose to do first names, last names, or if your child is ready, use other words.
- First, you will need to put one letter on each paper plate.
- Show each one to your child and ask them if they can tell you what the letter is.
- Provide support as needed. Some children may not recognize any letters and that is okay. Simply tell them what it is and ask them to repeat what you say.
- Next, let your child know that you are going to work together to put these letters in the right order to be able to spell their name. (see video for examples on how to work through this together).
- Go back and practice saying the letters in order several times.
- Ask your child to tell you each letter in the correct order.
- Continue practicing as needed.
Extension:
You can build on this idea and use numbers to help children learn their parents’ phone numbers.
-
- Put one number on each paper plate and follow the same steps as above.
- Name each number.
- Work with your child to put them in the right order.
- Then you will practice saying it together several times.
- Go back later and ask your child if they remember the phone number.
