Tell your child that today you will be making up your own story.
Start them off by opening the story. You can use phrases like:
Once upon a time there was …
A long, long time ago in a land far, far away …
Once a little girl/boy who had magical powers …
Be creative and have fun with it.
Encourage them to come up with what happens next.
Try keeping it at 2-3 sentences per turn as you switch off adding to the story.
Allow your child the opportunity to make the ending of the story.
You can choose to dictate and write down the story as you go along making it up together.
Once you have completed, go back and read it to your child.
Encourage them to make pictures for their story.
Put it together to create your own book.
