Academic Achievement Initiative

Improving Academic Achievement in Polk, Hardee & Highlands Counties

UWCF’s Academic Achievement Initiative helps to improve high school graduation rates.
Help us to improve academic achievement in Polk, Hardee and Highlands counties.

Polk County Public School graduation rates have improved from 69% to 80% over the past four years.

UWCF worked to establish collaborative tutoring and mentoring services for K-12 students at risk of failing school. Working with local experts in education, UWCF established age-appropriate curricula and reliable assessments consistent with best practices.

Students who receive UWCF funded services attend school more often, are promoted at a higher rate and receive higher grades in reading and math than a control group of statistically identical students who did not receive those services.

7,196

students received assistance last year through UWCF-funded programs.

80%

is the average graduation rate for Polk, Highlands and Hardee Counties.

Types of Academic Achievement services we fund:

  • Weekly tutoring with ratios of one credentialed adult to a group of 8 or fewer students
  • Weekly mentoring with ratios of one certified/trained adult to a group of 8 or fewer students
  • Weekly homework assistance with ratios of one credentialed adult to a group of 15 or fewer students

How we hold these services accountable:

  • Students must be promoted to the next grade and stay on track for graduation
  • Students must improve performance on one or more targeted core subjects (reading/language arts, math, science) as assessed by approved indicators and/or
  • Students must score at grade level+ or improve standardized test scores

Partner agencies with funded services include:

  • Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Sun Coast
  • Boy Scouts, Greater Tampa Bay Council
  • Boys and Girls Clubs of Polk County
  • Boys and Girls Club of Highlands County
  • Camp Fire Sunshine Central Florida
  • Girl Scouts of West Central Florida
  • Girls, Inc. of Lakeland
  • Girls, Inc. of Winter Haven
  • Highlands County Family YMCA
  • Learning Resource Center of Polk County, Inc.
